“When performing, we have a special twin connection where we can communicate and support each other on stage.”

Interview: We speak with The Mist Calls ahead of Next Big Thing

It’s been so refreshing to start on a music journey together as The Mist Calls. Prior to 2024, we were both focusing on learning a classical instrument. It’s felt totally freeing to write our own music and bring to our duo the musical influences that have inspired us. Even though we have very different tastes in the music we listen to, we have found that we have so much in common.

As twins, we’ve always understood how we both think in such different ways. It’s really interesting to combine our unique interpretations and create new ideas from this. When we write our songs together, the first thing that comes to Millie‘s mind is the lyrics, whereas with Joe, this is the complete opposite, but somehow we manage to merge our ideas together. When performing, we have a special twin connection where we can communicate and support each other on stage, which means everything to us. What’s most important to us in writing our music is that we want our music to be upbeat and have a fresh twist, and we hope this comes across in our music.

Since launching your journey in 2024 and already earning support from platforms like BBC Introducing, how have you come to understand each other’s creative instincts, and in what ways has that shaped the way you write and perform as a duo?

Pulls From The Tide, which we’re releasing on streaming platforms 13th March, is probably the song that we are both really proud of. Whilst writing this, we found our natural rhythm in writing music together. Recently, we have also started including jazzy tones in our newer songs which we’ve really enjoyed experimenting with.

Has there been a particular song or moment in your catalog that feels like a turning point for you both creatively?

We are often inspired by our random thoughts, memories and observations

Your music leans heavily into storytelling, who or what has been shaping the stories you’re telling?

We are often inspired by our random thoughts, memories and observations. We like to write about everyday experiences and hope that anyone discovering our music relates to our storytelling and finds something in our songs that resonates with them. We hope people enjoy our upbeat and relaxed music.

Little Buildings has a reputation for spotlighting emerging talent, what does being part of Next Big Thing mean for you as a duo at this stage in your journey?

It’s fantastic to have the opportunity to play at such a brilliant grass roots music venue that does so much to support local artists. We’re really looking forward to being part of the Next Big Thing and getting to play with the other artists at Little Buildings on February 11th.

For anyone discovering you for the first time at this Next Big Thing, what’s the one thing you hope they walk away understanding about your dynamic as siblings and as artists?

We are passionate about writing our own music. It gives us so much pleasure working together on our songs, which we hope shines through to anyone listening to us. As artists, we hope our music leaves people feeling happy and wanting to listen to more.
